Why choose Acupuncture?
Acupuncture can benefit nearly everyone. Research has shown Acupuncture to be an effective method for pain management, treatment of infertility, therapy for the reduction of stress and anxiety, and more. Traditionally acupuncture is used to treat illness, but can also be utilized as preventive medicine. Acupuncture helps to maintain a healthy body and work to prevent illness from occurring and reoccurring.
NEEDLES?
Acupuncture needles are very thin, about the width of a hair. Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are solid and thin, not designed to cut the skin. The needles do not typically hurt when inserted properly. Many people experience a tingling or heavy sensation. All needles that are individually packaged, sterilized, and disposable- never saved or reused.

Scared of needles?
Dr. Erickson also offers non-needle approaches to acupuncture. Acupressure is a popular alternative to acupuncture. Dr Erickson can incorporate into your treatment the use of stainless steel acupressure beads or the use of Tei Shin, a non piercing acupressure device.
What to expect
Your First Appointment
Your initial appointment consists of a comprehensive health interview and examination so Dr. Erickson can ensure your safety and determine the best course of treatment for you. This is also an opportunity to ask questions so you feel confident and comfortable with your treatment. Dr. Erickson may check your tongue, pulse, and the sensitivity of various acupuncture points. After the preliminary exam, you will receive your acupuncture treatment. Plan on approximately 60 to 90 minutes for your first visit. Following visits generally average about thirty(30) to forty-five(45) minutes.
Your Acupuncture Treatment
During your acupuncture treatment, you can expect to be lying or seated in a comfortable position and can expect anywhere from 10-15 needles to inserted per treatment. Generally the needles remain in for 15-30 minutes. You may experience vague sensations of numbness, dull aches, warmth and possible tingling. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about. Dr. Erickson may suggest additional modalities such as chiropractic adjustments, massage, hands on bodywork to compliment your acupuncture treatment.
Possible reactions to your treatment
Your acupuncture treatment may cause you to have a variety of reactions, especially your first treatment or after a particularly stressful time in your life. Some people experience an emotional release. This release can exhibit itself through a need to cry, laugh, or other emotional expressions. During your treatment we encourage you to stay as still as possible (so as not to bend the needles - this can be uncomfortable) but to allow your emotions to flow out or you. This is a normal response to your treatment. You may also have strange or uncomfortable thoughts, see shapes/colors as if in a semi-dreaming state, or go into a true dreaming state by falling asleep!
